6 Tips to Prevent Slipping on Your Yoga Mat

At Manduka, we often say that "some slipping is unavoidable," but there are several ways to reduce or prevent slipping on your yoga mat. Please refer to the guide below.

Tip 1 for not slipping on your yoga mat: Create a stable foundation

In poses such as Downward-Facing Dog, spread your fingers and toes wide, press into the mat, and distribute your weight evenly. This will stabilize your pose and reduce unnecessary strain on your joints.

Tip 2 for not slipping on your yoga mat: Be conscious of your core

If your core is not properly engaged, other parts of your body may be overstrained to maintain balance, which can lead to slipping. Gently draw in your lower abdomen with your breath to fully engage your core muscles.

Tip 3 for not slipping on your yoga mat: Break in your yoga mat

Like other sports equipment, high-performance yoga mats can take some time to break in. As you practice, move, and put weight on the mat, its surface will gradually break in, and the feel will change. Therefore, you may experience some slipping at first.

What's the best way to break in your mat faster? — Just keep using it.

Tip 4 for not slipping on your yoga mat: Clean your yoga mat properly

Using all-purpose cleaners or body soaps on your yoga mat can leave a film on the surface that causes slipping. After every practice, use a dedicated yoga mat cleaner to keep your mat clean.

Also, do not put your mat in a washing machine or near a shower. Avoid submerging it in water. Again, absolutely do not submerge it in water.

Tip 5 for not slipping on your yoga mat: Avoid using lotion

Products applied to the skin can affect how sebum and sweat are secreted. Lotions, in particular, can mix with sweat and remain on the skin's surface, weakening the mat's grip. Therefore, try to avoid using them before yoga or early in the day.

Tip 6 for not slipping on your yoga mat: Use a towel

Hot yoga towels absorb sweat from your body and mat, which helps to improve stability in your poses. They are especially recommended for those who sweat a lot.

By thoroughly absorbing sweat, they prevent the mat from becoming wet and slippery. Choosing a highly functional towel, such as one with silicone anti-slip processing or made of highly absorbent microfiber, will make it even more comfortable to use.
